Official event rules

Smokin' on the Rio is sanctioned by the International Barbeque Cookers Association (IBCA). All applicable IBCA rules apply, in addition to the local event rules below.

Local event rules

  • No ice or alcohol may be brought onto the grounds. Ice and beer will be sold to cooking teams at a discounted price.
  • No pets, golf carts, or ATV vehicles are allowed on the grounds.
  • Each team is provided a 40' × 40' campsite. Electricity and water on a first-come, first-served basis; no guarantee on amperage or water pressure.
  • Propane burners may only be used for cooking beans.
  • Multiple pits allowed as long as you stay within your campsite.
  • Generators allowed, but your campsite will be placed far from other teams and the public.
  • Gates closed to all team vehicle traffic Friday 6:30 PM – 12:00 AM.
  • Gates open for team vehicles Saturday 12:00 AM – 8:00 AM.
  • Gates closed to all vehicle traffic (including team vehicles) Saturday 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM.
  • Concert tickets are not included in team registration.

Meats and jackpots

Competition meats: Brisket, Pork Spare Ribs, Chicken, Fajitas (no IBCA points). Jackpots: Beans, Pan De Campo, Carne Guisada, and Chorizo (entered at the Head Cooks' Meeting).

The Head Cooks' Meeting is mandatory. Teams will receive turn-in times, judging procedure details, and the chorizo meat for the Chorizo Jackpot at that meeting.
